August Is Here — And It's Ours to Claim

August 2026

A Note from Ja'Bette

Hi Hub —

It's August, which around here means two things: the air finally admits it's summer, and we get to spend a whole month talking about something we don't say out loud enough — that Wishful Doing is a Black-owned, female-owned business, and that still means something.

August is National Black Business Month, started back in 2004 by Frederick E. Jordan and John William Templeton to make sure Black entrepreneurship gets more than a passing nod, and instead real visibility, real advocacy, and real dollars. Today there are over 3 million Black-owned businesses in this country.

We're proud to be one of them, and we're even prouder of the community we've built around that fact.

So this month's newsletter leans into that a little — who we are, who's joining us, and what's coming next in the Hub.

OWNING IT:

BLACK-OWNED, FEMALE-OWNED, MBE-CERTIFIED

Wishful Doing is Black-owned and female-owned. That's not a marketing line — it's the lens everything gets built through, from how we design a leadership program to who we choose to partner with.

This year, we also earned our Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification. If you haven't sat with what that actually means: MBE certification isn't a form you fill out and forget. It's a rigorous, third-party verification process confirming that a business is genuinely owned, operated, and controlled — at least 51% — by someone from a historically underrepresented group. It exists because “diverse-owned” gets claimed loosely enough that institutions needed a way to know the claim is real.

For us, that certification is a door — one that opens up procurement opportunities, corporate partnerships, and rooms we might not have been invited into otherwise. But it's also a signal, to you and to every leader and founder in our ecosystem: we're not adjacent to this work. We're standing inside it. Supporting a diverse community of leaders and founders isn't a value statement on a website for us. It's who signs the paperwork.

If you've been quietly building something and wondering whether spaces like this one are actually for you: they are. That's the whole point.

New Voices Inside the Wishful Doing Ecosystem

Part of what makes the Hub work is that we have humans in the room with something worth saying. This month, we're welcoming three new experts bringing their knowledge directly to Hub members.

Watch the Hub for their first offerings landing this month.

Upcoming Legacy Lab Activities

Dr. Linda Chambers' upcoming Legacy Lab programming is where strategy gets tested out loud, in real time, with people who understand the weight of leading. There are three ways to be in the room this month:

When Love Turns Lethal: The Hidden Crisis of Intimate Partner Violence, Mental Health, and Black Families, featuring Dr. Marissa Leslie and Dr. Timothy Golden

This one goes to a harder place than we usually go — intimate partner violence and its mental health toll inside Black families, named directly instead of talked around. We're bringing it into the Hub because silence hasn't protected anyone.

A note: this series covers domestic and intimate partner violence. If it touches something close to home, you don't have to sit with it alone — the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) is available 24/7. You can access and download a companion toolkit for this podcast series inside the Rise Room.

COURSE SPOTLIGHT: Rooted & Rising

Rooted and Rising is inside the Hub now. Some transformations don't come from doing more — they come from getting steady enough in who you already are to grow from there. That's the work this course holds space for.

Get More from the Hub

The Hub isn't a library you check out of once and forget. It works when you work it a little differently than most memberships:

  • Pick one room, not five. Rise Room, Impact Collective, or Legacy Lab — go deep in one before you spread across all three. Depth is where the relief actually shows up.
  • Show up live when you can. The replay is there for a reason, but the room is different when you're in it — that's where the mirror moments happen.
  • Bring one real thing, not your highlight reel. The members who get the most out of this space are the ones who show up with the actual problem, not the polished version of it.
  • Revisit, don't just consume. The on-demand trainings hit the second time differently, once you've lived a little more of the thing they're teaching.

You're not behind. You're just getting started, or getting steadier — either way, this is the room for it.

Talk soon,
